Understanding Mandelic Acid
What Makes JOS Different from the Rest?
There are many types of alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) — such as glycolic acid, mandelic acid, malic acid, citric acid, tartaric acid, and lactic acid.
In general, the smaller the molecular size, the deeper it penetrates — but also the more irritating it can be.
Not necessarily. While mandelic acid serums come in 10%, 15%, 18%, even 30%, all legal products must comply with regulations.
In Taiwan, the Ministry of Health and Welfare mandates AHA products must have a pH no lower than 3.5 — meaning no matter how high the percentage, the acid strength will be buffered.
Paying more doesn't always mean better results.
Here’s what most people don’t know:
Mandelic acid is a white, powder-like oil-soluble AHA with a benzene ring structure.
To dissolve it at high concentrations, many brands use alcohol-based solvents (ethanol, propylene glycol, etc.) — which are notorious for irritating and clogging acne-prone skin.
So, if you’re breaking out, it’s likely not the acid itself, but the harsh solvents in the formula.
Don’t confuse it with "purging" — very few people are truly allergic to mandelic acid itself.
JOS began as a brand specializing in AHA-based professional skincare.
With years of clinical experience, our Mandelic Acid Essence is formulated without any alcohols, drastically reducing the chance of breakouts or inflammation.
We focus on science-backed ingredients and skin compatibility — not shortcuts.
Only AHA with a benzene ring structure
(making it both oil-soluble and more skin-friendly)
Molecule size is roughly double that of glycolic acid, so it’s less irritating but still effective
Structurally similar to tyrosine — allows it to inhibit tyrosinase activity and reduce melanin synthesis
Historically used as an antibacterial compound in medicine
Regulates oil production and rebalances sebum
Brightens skin tone and enhances glow
Accelerates skin cell turnover
Softens fine lines and smooths texture
Minimizes enlarged pores and improves elasticity
Start 2–4 weeks before treatment:
Maintain strict sun protection
Stop facials, scrubs, or exfoliants 1 week prior
On the day of use: clean skin, no makeup
Cleanse thoroughly to remove oil and residue for better acid absorption
Apply 2–3 days consecutively, observe for peeling or flaking
Since the skin naturally renews every ~28 days, once a week is usually enough
If peeling occurs, pause use, and prioritize hydration and sunscreen
5–10 sessions are typically needed for visible results
